1. Master’s thesis (MT) topic

  • The MT topic is announced by the head of the specialized unit in charge of the training field or proposed by the student, with an accompanying research outline, approved by the instructor and the head of the specialized unit.
  • The principal decides to assign the thesis topic to the student and approve the instructor based on the recommendation of the head of the specialized unit and the head of the Office of Graduate Affairs (OGA).

2. Requirements for the thesis

  • The thesis must have scientific value, practical value, cultural value, ethics and be consistent with the fine customs and traditions of the Vietnamese people.
  • The thesis must comply with current Intellectual Property Law. The research results in the thesis must be the results of the student’s work and must not have been published in any other research project.
  • The thesis is presented scientifically, clearly, coherently, and without erasure.
  • The thesis of a research program and related scientific publications by the student is the main author and is a scientific report with new contributions in terms of theory, academia, or new results in research of a topical scientific issue in the training industry.

3. Time to complete the thesis

  • The official time to conduct the MT is calculated from the date the President signs the decision to assign the topic and assign the instructor. Students, supervisors, and specialized units propose a specific time to complete the thesis, usually 6 months for a research program in the Research 2 program, with no time limit for the Research 1 program but ensure it is within the training period.

4. Changes during the thesis implementation process

  • During the process of conducting the Master’s degree, if the topic and (or) instructor change compared to the decision to assign the topic but do not change the research direction, approval from the specialized unit is required.
  • In case the assigned topic cannot be completed, the student must:
    • Submit an application to receive a topic in the industry’s next topic assignment round.
    • Carry out procedures to protect the outline for the new topic and pay the tuition fee for the 2nd MT.
    • In case of not completing the Master’s degree within the time specified in the topic assignment decision:
    • Students apply to extend the time to complete the MT, with approval from the instructor and confirmation from the professional unit.
    • The extension period for completing the MT does not exceed the maximum study time of the course.

5. Thesis supervisor

  • The main instructor must be a full-time lecturer or researcher of VNU-HCM.
  • The instructor and co-instructor must ensure the following conditions:
    • Achieve a doctoral degree or higher, with expertise appropriate to the student’s MT topic direction.
    • Ensure sufficient foreign language capacity and application of information technology for teaching, research and international scientific exchange.
    • Have scientific research results related to the learner’s field of study within 5 years up to the time of instruction assignment.
    • Meet other requirements according to the training program standards of the industry, training field and regulations of IU.

6. Conditions for thesis defense

  • Students must simultaneously meet the following conditions:
    • Students complete the courses of the training program, with a minimum cumulative average score of 55 or higher on a 100-point scale.
    • Not being prosecuted for criminal liability and not being disciplined or suspended from school; not be denounced according to the provisions of law on scientific content in the thesis.
    • Meet the scientific article requirements for the research program (the scientific article must have the name of International University, VNU-HCM as the host unit).
    • There is a request for defense and an honor guarantee of honest research results, and there must be confirmation from the supervisor that the thesis meets the prescribed requirements and consent to defense. The specialized unit sends a confirmation letter and a list of requests for establishing the Master’s Degree Defense Council to the OGA.
    • The thesis has been approved for defense by at least 01 reviewer.
    • Tuition fees completed.
    • In case the conclusions of both reviewers do not agree with the student’s defense, the specialized unit presiding over the meeting includes the Head of the specialized unit, the Chairman of the Council, 02 reviewers, and the instructor. The guide will consider whether to allow the student to defend or not. Only when the concluding opinion of the meeting agrees to allow the student to protect the Master’s Degree, will the specialized unit put the student on the list of people allowed to protect. In case the meeting’s concluding opinions do not agree to allow the student to defend the MT, the student must adjust the MT according to the opinion of the review officer to be protected in the next evaluation.
